Seeing in Spiritual 3-D

Debby Reaves

But God has revealed it to us by His Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. (1 Corinthians 2:10)

Several years ago I visited my friend,

Author Debbie

Karen in Florida for a few days. While there, we decided to go to the Universal Studios in Orlando for a day outing. What fun it was to learn about the making of many familiar television shows and movies! One of the highlights of our Universal trip was “The Terminator.” At the entrance, we were instructed to grab a pair of 3-Dimensional glasses for use during the presentation. I remember how very different things appeared when I viewed the screen with these special glasses. I could see birds, bats, and various other flying objects coming out of the screen towards me. But when I took off the glasses, my vision was limited only to what was on the screen. The movie would have been uneventful and ordinary had I not seen it from the 3-D perspective.

I believe a woman after God’s own heart has a kind of spiritual 3-D vision. She does not stop at seeing the surface things of God but she has a heart to go deeper. She is never satisfied with the status quo but desires the deep things of God: Things that no eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived. No other in the scriptures has ever been referred to as “A man after God’s own heart” except David. As I thought about a woman after God’s own heart, I went back to David to see why he had been described as such. The answer is found in 1 Samuel 13:13-14. God was looking for a man who would completely obey His commands, and Saul was not that man, for he fell into a pattern of half-obeying God and believing that he was actually doing all that God desired. It was here that Samuel stated that God would be placing on the throne a leader who would seek after His heart.

A woman after God’s own heart is a woman who is willing to obey God completely — a woman who constantly does what is right (Psalm 106:3). She is a woman like Abigail, who daily walks in the wisdom of the Lord as she waits for a breakthrough. She chooses the better part when she allows Jesus to set the tone for her entire day. She acknowledges the Lord for direction in every choice and decision, no matter how major or minor. In other words, a woman after God’s own heart is poised to see all of life from her Lord’s perspective because abiding in Him is her way of life. Just as with the 3-D glasses, the eyes of her heart can see so much more of God and she is prepared to be completely obedient to that vision.

Prayer: Lord, it is my desire for you to give me your 3-D vision so that I can become a woman who is sold out for you. Draw me closer to you and take me to a higher level of seeing and being. I know that one of the main ingredients for being a woman after your own heart is complete obedience and so I ask you to strengthen me in this area. Amen.

Encouragement Tip: Think about some areas of your life in which the Holy Spirit has been tugging at your heart to do something that you have been putting off. In order to become completely obedient, remember that you must obey God right when He speaks to you and then carry out every command that He has revealed to you. God will eventually exalt you to a higher calling because He knows He can now trust you to obey Him completely.
