Wardrobe Fit for a Saint
Debby ReavesWhose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting of apparel; But let it be the hidden man of the heart. (1 Peter 3:3-4a)
But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfill the lust thereof. (Romans 13:14)
Most women are very conscientious

about appearance, whether it is attire, hair, nails, or make-up. Even when we try to put such thoughts into their proper perspective, our culture insists that we spend lots of time thinking about how we look. Annually, millions of women spend millions of dollars to look their best. Having the latest fashions, whether they are designer jeans, suits, or that special evening apparel, is high on the priority list of most women. Career women must have the right power suit, young moms the right workout gear, and older women must never dress like they are “old”! The days of flowered dresses and tightly wound perms for elderly women are passé!
A variety of clothing styles to fit each occasion of life load up our closets. (And we still have nothing to wear, it seems!) You know where I’m going with this - what about our spiritual wardrobe? Are we equally prepared to “dress” for the daily challenges we encounter? Are our spiritual closets stuffed to the brim?
What we find hanging in our spiritual wardrobe will have a direct bearing on how we face life’s challenges. How do you “shop” for such clothing? I read an article about a woman who paid a clothing expert $1500 to go through all of her clothing to determine what she should keep, what she should never wear. Then she paid $250 an hour for that same woman to go shopping for her – to dress her for success! Oh, to have a personal shopper to examine our old spiritual clothing and replace it with a new wardrobe that guaranteed success!
But there is Someone Who will give us that direction and the bill has already been paid! All we need to do is invest much of our time in abiding in the Lord, walking in intimacy with Him. It is only in intimate communion with Christ that we acquire --
- the garment of grace to endure
- the garment of joy on which we focus while we press toward the mark…
- the garment of righteousness so that we can overcome Satan’s lies…
- the garment of peace even in the midst of turmoil…
- the garment of the Word of God so that we can destroy every fiery dart of doubt, deceit, and denial shot at us by the enemy…
- the garment of compassion to minister to the brokenhearted…
- the garment of goodness to overcome evil.
These are just some of the garments that make up a wardrobe fit for a saint. And just as we invest in physical clothing, we must invest in our spiritual attire as well. May we be diligent in acquiring the garments that count not only for now but also for eternity?
Remember: In order to arise to every occasion life brings, we must have invested time abiding in the Lord, so that we can accumulate the Royal Garments we will need on that day! May we allow our rich Daddy (Abba) to lavish on us a complete makeover and a whole new wardrobe!
Prayer: Daddy, thank you for offering us a wardrobe fit for a saint. May you place in our hearts an unending desire to abide in you so that we can be dressed in Your best. Although you have given us all things to enjoy, and that includes the physical things, may we be more interested in what interests you, and that is our spiritual appearance. Let our spiritual closets be filled with the Royal Garments that will keep us prepared for the varied occasions of life. I love you, O Lord, my King. Amen.
Encouragement Tip: Remember that quiet time I talked about in another devotional? Well, That would be the first Royal garment to place in your spiritual closet. Combine that with scripture memorization, Bible study, prayer, and even the singing of hymns and praise and worship songs. What a wonderful investment you will be making in your Wardrobe Fit for a Saint!
