Business Ethics
Dr. Chuck BettersDear Dr. Betters,
I am presently helping a friend in a travel agency. We are "considered" a Christian agency in that all workers are Christians. However, there is a woman here who is living with a divorced man. My boss is not very happy about this situation as it may be wrongly construed that we accept this life style. My boss has spoken to her and told her that what she is doing is wrong because she is living with this man, they are not married and the man is a divorcee. She says that the man provides her needs. My boss said that she should depend on God to meet her needs and should have the faith to do this. My boss wanted to fire her, but I said to the boss that she does her job well, that the boss has confronted her and that she is accountable to God.
My questions are:
1) Am I wrong to provide advice to my boss and that, indeed, she should be fired?
2) If this lady does marry this man, is it okay to continue to employ her?
Thank you for your comments supported by scripture.
Pastor Betters responds:
If this business is set up as a distinctively Christian business legally and has a morals clause in each person's contract then you can insist she conforms. If the company was not set up that way you cannot insist. As long as she does her job well you would have no grounds to dismiss her. As a Christian however, you need to follow the counsel of Matthew 18:15-17 to confront her sin outside of work. You can order my teaching on this subject via the web, "The Lost Art of Church Discipline" I hope this helps.
In His Grip,
Dr. Chuck Betters
