Making Abundant Riches Known In the Name of Christ

Ask Dr. Betters

Is God preparing me for calamity?

Dr. Chuck Betters

Life is good right now but any time something good has happened to me, something bad always seems to offset it. I often find myself looking over my shoulder, so to speak, waiting for something to hit me from out of the blue. I know the Lord will not test me with any more than I can handle. How should I handle these feelings of impending doom?
- Joe

Pastor Betters responds:

Dear Joe,

Wow. If I knew the answer to that question I would be God. We never know when calamity will strike. We must be prepared to suffer in this life. Some will suffer to greater degrees than others. Some may never experience much sorrow or pain.

Having said that let me also say that suffering is how we learn to trust God and causes us to grow in ways we never could if we never suffered. Paul says we must be willing to endure hardship as a soldier, a farmer, and an athlete. All of those occupations require training, hard work, discipline, and yes, pain.

Additionally, to care is a virtue but to worry is a sin. One cannot live their life as you call it with some sort of impending doom. That would paralyze us. Satan is the master of fear that paralyzes. If he can get us to sit around all day in fear then he can immobilize us from advancing the kingdom of God.

So I say live your life in the context of worship. We worship God when all goes well and we worship Him when all hell breaks loose in our lives. Either way He is sufficient to grow in us rich blessings. Trust and faith are powerful tools unleashed in us when we see pain as our friend. It is a friend in that it draws us uniquely to Christ. I hope this helps.

In His Grip,
Dr. Chuck Betters
