Make New Friends - Read a Biography

Linda

What did you read this summer?

Something fun? Something encouraging? Something new that you never read before? How about your spouse or your children or even your best friend? Did you talk about the book with someone, anyone?

A friend who has never seen herself as a reader, took the challenge to read a three part historical novel series. Each book is over 500 pages. She just finished them and says they inspired her to step out of her comfort zone and into ministry. The author may not have had that goal in mind, but God did!

The Impact of One Life

Make reading a part of your fall routine this year. If you've never done so before, plan to read ONE Christian biography. Just one. Read about the life of one saint who has gone on before, and the impact that one life had on so many others. Browse the biography section of your favorite online store, or try your church library. You will be amazed at the vast selection available. Many Christian leaders will tell you that one of the biggest encouragements to spiritual growth is to read about the lives of other Christians who have lived, and struggled, labored and loved, and brought glory to the name of God through the witness of the lives they lived.

Encourage Children to Read!

For any child you love, find the Sower Series, Christian Heroes Then aHeroes for Young Readersnd Now, Heroes of the Faith, Heroes for Young Readers (Goldenbook size.. and they rhyme!), Daughters of the Daughters of the FaithFaith, or Hero Tales. These are great for young people, but the adults who read them to their children also fall in love with them! Read an entire book about one life or read an anthology of different Christian heroes. If you don't have a church library, share the cost with several friends. In no time, you could start a children's library with some great biographies for the entire church family to enjoy for generations to come!!

There is Still Time!!!

Read WITH or read TO someone you love! There is a deep, warm bonding process that occurs when one person reads to another, whether it be husband and wife, friend with friend, adult with child or sibling to sibling. The careful speaking of words, infused with passion, emotion, and meaning, creates a special time of understanding and enjoyment that is too often missed in our hectic, time-pressured world. Far too often, the words our family members hear us speak are words of organization, scheduling, directions, or even complaints. Wouldn't it be great for your loved ones to hear your voice speaking words of words? Present to them inspiring stories of faith, courage, hope, and love.

When was the last time you read to someone you loved? Over a meal, in the car, before bed, instead of an afternoon nap?

If you have no children living at home or your grandchildren live far away, have you ever considered reading a book into a tape recorder and sending the book and tape to a child you love? How about surprising your husband with something to listen to as he jogs or commutes?

Christian biographies introduce some interesting and amazing new friends to your family - friends who will be an encouragement and blessing to them for many years to come.

Looking for an act of KINDNESS toward those you love? Nourish their hearts and minds with a wonderful true story they will never forget.
