Peacemaking Women: Biblical Hope for Resolving Conflict

Deb Welch

When conflict arises, in our churches, our homes, thePeacemaking Women: Biblical Hope for Resolving Conflict workplace -- you name it -- the ripple effects can be damaging, if not devastating. Or we can take a Biblical approach to conflict, as discussed in Tara Klena Barthel and Judy Dabler's book titled Peacemaking Women: Biblical Hope for Resolving Conflict, and experience reconciled and redemptive relationships that are radically different from the worldly ways of gossip, spite, bitterness, and even hatred.

In this book, Tara and Judy offer a deep message, rooted in the gospel, and framed by real solutions that provide meaningful, lasting change to our conflicted relationships. Their topic and method are based on the familiar and popular basic principles found in Ken Sande’s book "The Peacemaker.” These principles show us exactly how we are reconciled in our relationships with God, self and others. Peacemaking Women is written to give us hope for becoming genuine women of peace, and to help us live as real ambassadors of Christ to one another.

Included in each chapter are questions for reflection and a resource listing for further reading. In addition, the authors’ personal stories offer real-life examples of inspiration and connection that spur women on toward love and good deeds -- all, of course, bathed in the Gospel of Peace, which is our Lord Jesus Christ.
God has really used this book and its teaching to change the way I view "doing Church.” Just like many other women in my season of life, I was longing for deeper friendships and relationships within the church. Yet, no matter where I turned, I just felt like a conflict magnet. I was not at peace – within myself, with others, or with God.

The message of Peacemaking Women provided a life-changing view and approach to my struggle to “fit in” at church. I learned that the path of true peacemaking ran straight through the biblical steps of faith, repentance, and right worship of God alone, toward true reconciliation. The further I read, the more clearly I could see how all of the areas of my family life, work life, church life and so forth were littered – polluted – with conflict arising through the destructive and deceptive sin of idolatry.

Further in the book, topics of depression, shame and fear of man are handled with adeptness by two experienced authors, who’ve both served as Biblical counselors and who have had personal experience with the subject matter. They offer authentic stories from their own lives that exhibit the hope we have for the sanctifying process of change, healing, and reconciliation though our faith in God.
While Peacemaking Women certainly does provide sound, practical solutions for women who desire to grow in their knowledge of Christ and to walk in His peace, it really is so much more than a mere practical guide. It is not a book to be read through quickly or skimmed. Instead, reading it thoughtfully and reflectively has allowed me to soak up deep insight firmly rooted in Scripture and based on the truth of who God is, what He has done for us in Christ, and what He will continue in us until He completes it. For this reader, the lessons and the message were a life-altering beginning toward leading a life of peace in Christ.

Bryan Chapell of Covenant Theological Seminary writes:
"Peacemaking Women is not just about peacemaking. This powerfully honest book is about the peace the Gospel brings every heart that applies the truths of the Gospel to past wounds and present brokenness. And this book is about how personally embracing this Gospel of peace makes each of us a loving instrument of God's grace to others."

Charles W. Colson of Prison Fellowship writes:
“Peacemaking Women should be read once for the sheer joy of it. Then it will be the sort of book you pull off the shelf again and again. There is a treasure chest of hope and encouragement on these pages."
