Decluttering The Soul

“Got Junk?”Author Debbie

Let all things be done decently and in order.

1 Corinthians 14:40

A few months ago, someone left a flyer on our door that stated, “Got Junk.” It was an advertisement to have any junk removed from your home and hauled off. I immediately thought of several items I owned that had become useless to me. With some of them being quite heavy and bulky, this advertisement sounded very appealing. Ironically, to my surprise, God decided to apply the words of this flyer to my spiritual needs.

For the past several years, I had been accumulating quite a bit of clutter in my soul. Worries, fears, disappointments, health issues, anger, resentment, bitterness, hopelessness, frustrations, shame, and despair along with a host of other things, had made a resting place of my soul. I desperately needed to be uncluttered because, believe me, I had a lot of junk. During the spring of 2004, God decided that it was high time for a thorough spring cleaning. With a kind of urgency, I found myself un-cluttering the storage areas under the bathroom sinks. I even invested in storage bins so that there would be some rhyme and reason to the items stored there. I discarded much of the junk until everything was decent and in perfect order. Next, I began the tedious process of removing and bagging up clothing and shoes to give away to charity. Prior to this, our once barren and messy basement had been transformed into a place of beauty. Even our yard received a badly needed makeover and several shrubs were removed. When all this un-cluttering was completed, I wondered why I had been driven to do this. The answer came from God’s still small voice when He said: “Just the way you un-cluttered your bathroom vanities, I am going to un-clutter your soul. Remember how barren, dark, and uninviting your basement used to be? It now has a warm ambience and has become a place of beauty and calm. Likewise, I will transform your soul into a place of beauty.” And so, just as God said, He began the process of un-cluttering me. Much of the “junk” that was stored up in me has now been removed. I am beginning to feel whole, not half. I feel free, not inhibited. I feel like I am soaring, not bound to a weight of issues. I can now more confidently enter into my divine calling, for God has removed from me and hauled away the junk in my soul. What about you? Got junk? Let Jesus take you on one of His Spring Cleaning sprees and you will begin to experience the Abundant Life He came to give us.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, you wonderfully orchestrated the order of all your magnificent creations. There was a rhyme and reason to what you created and how those creations came together. You created bodies of water and then stocked them with every living thing that belonged there. May we follow your example by being better organized in our daily lives. Amen.
