Summertime Fun

Keri Betters

Keri BettersAh, June is in the air! The weather is now warm. There is no school. Summer has officially begun!

Have you ever had that restless feeling? All during the school year, have you anticipated summer arriving? Then, when school ends and summer finally appears, you have no idea what to do next? If the answer is yes, I can totally relate.

This year, I don't think I'll have any wild adventure to the Australian Outback or to Rome, Italy. I probably will have little "adventures" in my own back yard, though. No, I don't mean like a little kid pretending he's fighting the dragons to get to the castle. I mean real adventures. Something totally fun, yet in the same way, unexpected. Adventures come with every summer, you just have to look for them.

What do I mean by looking for adventure? I mean, don't waste your summer waiting for BIG things to happen suddenly. Find the little pleasures in life and go with them. I have some suggestions that you can use if you find yourself having a boring summer with no adventures whatsoever.

If it's really hot out (which is usually the case in the summertime), grab a friend (let me rephrase that -- ask a friend to come with you, don't kidnap them). Fill some water balloons and have a water balloon fight. Go grab (yes, I do mean grab this time) some beach towels and pretend you're in Hawaii, even though you're in your back yard. Hey, if you even want to go a step further, make some fruit smoothies or something delicious, and surprise your friends with them. Or, better yet, make them together!

SummerHost a summer social event with all your buddies, if it's OK with your parents, of course. Play random games around the yard (like Duck, Duck, Goose or Tag) and don't worry about acting silly. It's summer and this is your adventure. If you want to do something extra crazy, have everyone share what their favorite childhood game was and play it. This could be a board game, but it could also be classics like "Simon Says" or "Mother, May I?"

I, personally, think that summer isn't summer without at least one trip to the beach. So, if it's possible, try to head to the beach with your family or with friends. The ocean breeze is so relaxing and the whole beach atmosphere should be the definition of summer.

The Lord made each and every day. He created it for you and for me. He created it so we could glorify Him. Take David's advice when he wrote Psalm 118:24. He said, "This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it."

I hope I've given you a few ideas on how to make your summer adventurous, without going too far, at all. Of course, if you are planning to go on a "real" adventure (to the Australian Outback or on a Safari), that's cool, too. For the rest of us, make this a summer you'll look back and think, "Yeah, I did have some pretty cool adventures, didn't I?"

Don't look back on the summertime and think that it was boring. Have some adventures of your own. Try to be creative and find exciting things to do. Remember what Psalm 118:24 says and rejoice in every day that the Lord has made.
