Are there really 66 books in the Bible?
Dr. Chuck BettersDr. Betters,
I was listening to WRBS 95.1 in Baltimore, and heard a message for your ministry, and you said the 66 books of the Bible was all there was. Nothing added nothing taken away. What about the Books of the Bible that the Roman Cathloic Church ommited in the 6th century under the rule of Constantine? what about the sections of the Bible in Genisis, and other books they omited? For Example the book of Thomas, the Book of Mary, Etc. Just curious?
Pastor Betters responds:
Thanks for your question. Historic Protestantism does not recognize the Apocryphal writings as canonical in nature. The reasons are based upon either the pseudo-pigraphal (false authorship) nature of the book or the fact that their internal doctrinal structure is in many places inconsistent with the rest of the teachings of the New Testament Canon. Many of these 3rd and 4th century writings are nothing more than a record of the heresy of gnosticism that denied the humanity of Jesus and questioned His divinity. I do not know of what you speak concerning Genesis. I have not heard or studied that anything was omitted. I have always held to the same canon the Jews did in the 39 books of the OT. I reject the OT apocryphal writings for the same reason I do the NT apocryphal books.
In His Grip,
Dr. Chuck Betters
